Many federal employees in Del Norte County could start an indefinite furlough period today if Congress' inability to solve a budget impasse causes a government shutdown.

The Redwood National Park visitor center in Crescent City will close today if Congress has not passed legislation to fund the government by midnight Tuesday, and more than 100 Redwood National Park employees will be asked to head home until further notice.

All of Redwood's seven law enforcement employees will be retained to patrol park lands, and one water systems operator will stay on the clock to test potable water supplies in the park, according to Redwood Parks officials.

Employees at Six Rivers National Forest will experience the same uncertain future unless funding is appropriated. Firefighters, law enforcement, and other staff needed to prevent property damage will be retained during the shutdown.
