A Grants Pass, Ore., man died after sliding into the plow of a Caltrans truck on U.S. Highway 199 on Tuesday.

Raymond Shapiro, 53, was driving his 1999 Ford Explorer south on the highway near mile-marker 9.66 between Hiouchi and Gasquet around 10:20 a.m. when he lost control around a left-hand curve and slid sideways into the opposite lane, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Mathew Brixey, 31, of Crescent City, was driving a 2004 International Caltrans truck with a snow plow attached to the front in the northbound lane and tried to brake, the CHP stated.

The driver side of the Explorer hit the plow, CHP stated.
