Local Shop Smart store to close or be sold

Shop Smart Food Warehouse in Crescent City is one of 16 grocery stores owned by CandK Markets that will either be sold or will close as a result of the Brookings-based company filing Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Approximately 41 people work at Shop Smart in Crescent City, CandK Market spokesman Grant Lunde saidTuesday.

"If it closes we will try to keep as many people as we can at other locations," Lunde said. "And those folks we (can't keep) we'll try to help them as best we can with other opportunities through California Workforce services."

CandK Market's decision to file Chapter 11 bankruptcy stems from increased competition from large discount stores such as Walmart and Costco moving into areas traditionally served by CandK stores, according to the announcement on the company's website.

Other CandK Market stores that are closing include the Shop Smart Food Warehouse in Harbor, Ore., and a Ray's Food Place store in Eureka.

Earlier this year, CandK Market shut down its Ray's Food Place stores in Smith River and Crescent City. Those stores remain vacant.
