A malfunction at Crescent City's wastewater treatment plant caused a spill that prompted the city to shut down the beach near the facilityWednesday.

Public Works Director Eric Wier said a valve on the plant's digester was left in the wrong position, which caused it to overflow. Crews responded immediately to clean up the spill, he said. He declined to immediately say how much sewage spilled.

Wier said the city was closing the beach "just to be on the safe side." He added that he is in the process of drafting a report about the incident and will notify the state as well as the City Council.

"Our crews responded effectively and efficiently and we averted the incident as soon as possible," said Wier.
