Mary L. James, 66, of Crescent City, died Wednesday night in a one-vehicle crash that sent her husband to the hospital.

Don R. James, 73, of Crescent City was driving a 2003 Dodge Truck and towing a 2011 Keystone Cougar Travel Trailer southbound on U.S. 199 near mile post marker 3.5 north of Walker Road when the truck veered onto the west shoulder, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The right side of the trailer collided with a tree, causing the right front side of the truck to collide with another tree, the CHP stated.

His wife was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated by personnel from Crescent City Fire Protection District, Smith River Fire Protection District, Fort Dick Protection District and Del Norte Ambulance.

She succumbed to her injuries despite life-saving efforts at the scene, the CHP stated.

The driver sustained lacerations to the right side of his forehead and was transported to Sutter Coast Hospital, where he was treated and released.

The cause of the wreck is still under investigation.
