The Community Action and Prevention Alliance will be hosting "Cultivating Community Health" on Tuesday as this year's prevention and action forum in Del Norte.
In years past it has been known as the "Meth Summit," but it has been changed this year to have a broader focus then previous events.
"Historically, this event has been called 'The Meth Summit' or 'The Meth and Other Drugs Forum'," said Holly Wendt, prevention program coordinator for Del Norte County Department of Health and Human Services, in a prepared statement.
"This year members of CAPA have really thought about what our families need and the decision was made collectively to bring in amazing guest speakers to focus on information to support families in making good choices with the right information," stated Wendt.
Angela Da Re will be this year's keynote speaker. She is the director of prevention of the National Council on Drug and Alcohol Dependence in Sacramento.
She will be touching on "how to be positive in your community and how to be an active parent," said Wendt
Spare Change, a Eureka youth theater troupe, will perform skits focused on peer pressure, bullying and drug and alcohol issues among youth, Wendt said.
Local physician Jesse Vos will also be there to share information about prescription drug abuse.
Several local youth groups, including Expanding Youth Horizons, Coastal Connections and Del Norte Youth Council, will be there to put on the event and do crafts with children while parents listen to the speakers, Wendt said.
"This is my first year as the facilitator for CAPA," Wendt said. "My understanding is that turnout has varied from 50 to more than 200 people through the last 12 years of these forums. This year we are just hoping that families come and have fun getting information. We will have food, child care and raffles for those families who participate."
A Kindle, sweatshirts and gift certificates will be among the prizes to be raffled.
The event is free to the public and begins at 5:30 p.m. in the main gymnasium at Del Norte High School.
