Local man dies in wreck on Highway 199

A 57-year-old Crescent City man diedSaturdayafter his 2002 Dodge Caravan struck a redwood tree on U.S. Highway 199 north of Walker Road.

The man, whose name has not been released, was driving his minivan south at about11:45 a.m.when the vehicle left the roadway and struck the tree, according to a California Highway Patrol press release.

Passersby were able to remove the victim from the vehicle, which had caught fire. The minivan then became fully engulfed in flames. The driver appeared not to be wearing a seatbelt, according to the CHP. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The man's next of kin has not yet been notified of the incident, said CHP Officer Brandy Gonzalez.

The CHP responded to the incident along with the Crescent Fire Protection District, Smith River Fire Protection District, Del Norte Ambulance, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Del Norte County Sheriff's Office.
