Local man, 30, held after altercation outside Shooters

Crescent City police arrested a 30-year-old man who allegedly stabbed another man in the neck during a fight outside Shooters Billiards early Sunday.

Matthew Honeycutt allegedly slashed 25-year-old Aaron Herring, also of Crescent City, resulting in a 4-inch-long laceration to the neck, said Crescent City Police Chief Doug Plack. Herring had allegedly been hitting Honeycutt in the face while Honeycutt was in his car, Plack said.

Police received the call at about 1:45 a.m. Plack said Honeycutt and Herring may have been involved in a verbal dispute before it escalated into a fight.

Plack said it took 11 staples to close the wound in Herring's neck. He was listed in stable condition Monday at Sutter Coast Hospital, according to hospital spokeswoman Beth Liles.

The case is still under investigation, Plack said. Honeycutt was booked into the Del Norte County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and attempted murder. He is a correctional officer at Pelican Bay State Prison, Plack said.

"Information is limited," Plack said. "We're still awaiting follow-up interviews of cooperative witnesses."

Another person was struck during the altercation, but was not injured, Plack said.
