Pedestrian, 66, found dead; driver leaves scene

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the death of a Yakima, Wash., man whose body was found alongside U.S. Highway 101 near Smith River early Saturday.

Ronald Earl Silva, 66, was walking on the highway north of Lopez Road and was struck by a vehicle whose driver fled the scene, according to a CHP press release.

When officers arrived at about 2:25 a.m., Silva was lying on the west shoulder of the road. Medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene, according to the press release.

The CHP is looking for witnesses to the actual incident or any unusual events near Highway 101 and Lopez Road from 2 to 2:30 a.m. Anyone with information is asked to call the CHP's Crescent City office at 464-3117.
