170 Del Norters in danger of losing jobless benefits

Some Del Norters receiving unemployment benefits from the federal government are in danger of losing them.

The U.S. Senate is expected to vote Monday on whether it will renew extended benefits for unemployed Americans. The House of Representatives will also have to vote, if the extension receives 60 favorable votes in the Senate.

As of Dec. 28, Americans who have reached their unemployment benefit limits are not receiving extensions.

In Del Norte, it's estimated about 170 residents could be affected by a non-renewal, said Tim Hoone, Workforce Center Director for Rural Human Services.

Some residents could receive extensions on their state unemployment benefits if they qualify. The state benefits normally run for 26 weeks, as opposed to the federal program, which is a year, Hoone said.

People who have been laid off from certain local businesses after Jan. 1, 2012, could receive an extra 26 weeks of state benefits, Hoone said.

Those businesses include A Gamer's Retreat, Chetco Federal Credit Union, Community Assistance Network, Crescent City Internal Medicine, Del Norte Unified School District, Hambro Group, Noll Surf and Skate, Papaya Thai Restaurant, Red's Crescent Drive In, Red's Diner, Rural Human Services, Shopsmart and Top Blue Marine.

In addition to having been laid off by the business, applicants would need to engage in a training program that would expand their work skill set.

Anyone interested in learning more about the opportunity can contact or stop by the Workforce Center. Its phone number is 464-8347 and its address is 286 M St.
