Supervisors: No DA appointment

Micks will continue to run the office until voters make the ultimate decision

Del Norte County supervisors have decided they will not appoint an interim district attorney to finish suspended DA Jon Alexander's term.

The supervisors opted at their Tuesday meeting to delay any appointment until the June primary election takes place so as not to influence voters.

They had previously intended to interview applicants for the position. Five people were seeking it, but one was disqualified for residing outside the county, said County Administrative Officer Jay Sarina.

As a result of the decision, Assistant Dis-

trict Attorney Katherine Micks will remain at the helm.

Micks has been leading the DA's Office since Alexander was suspended by the Board of Supervisors last April after a State Bar Court judge recommended he be disbarred and took away his privilege to practice law pending a final decision by the state Supreme Court.

"With the election in June, it seemed like it would be giving an unfair advantage for the board to step up ahead of the voters," said Board Chairman Dave Finigan on Wednesday.

He brushed off the notion that by not appointing anyone, supervisors were giving an advantage to Micks.

"We didn't endorse anybody," said Finigan.

If someone receives a majority of the votes cast in the June election, he or she will likely be appointed the DA to finish out the remainder of the year, Finigan said.

If a November run-off is necessary, then the winner will likely be appointed immediately, Finigan said.

Former DA Robert Drossel, who lost a run-off to Alexander in 2010, remains the only attorney to have announced a candidacy for DA.

Candidates can begin officially filing in February.
