A race is shaping up for a Del Norte Superior Court judgeship.
Local attorney Darren McElfresh announced Friday that he intends to run against Judge Chris Doehle in June's primary election.
McElfresh has been practicing law for 17 years in Del Norte County in cri-minal defense, prosecution and family and civil law.
In 2004, McElfresh spent about a year as a deputy district attorney before heading into criminal defense. He is currently a public defender and practices family law.
Doehle has also taken out documents to run for the position she was appointed to. She's currently finishing out the term of Judge Robert Weir, who retired.
Doehle was an associate attorney at Harland Law Firm for five years before starting her own practice. She received her law degree from the University of Washington and her bachelor's degree from the University of Oregon.
McElfresh describes himself as a trial attorney who has more than 100 trials under his belt.
"I would bring the most experience to the job," said McElfresh.
He considers his wide range in practicing law an asset he could bring to the bench as a trial judge.
"I think my work with all fields of the law are paramount and that my well-rounded background is crucial in being an efficient and impartial judge," said McElfresh.
Doehle could not be reached for comment Friday.
