Volunteers are being sought to help run the Crescent City office of the Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program at the Area 1 Agency on Aging.

HICAP counselors share unbiased information and provide assistance with Medicare programs and related insurance. HICAP serves Medicare beneficiaries in Del Norte and Humboldt counties.

The HICAP program trains counselors under the guidance of the California Department of Aging. Counselors offer assistance to beneficiaries who are new to Medicare, family members, caregivers or providers. Counselors provide information and assist with problems relating to: original Medicare, Medigap, Medicare Advantage, Medicare Prescription Drug Plans and long-term care insurance counseling.

Recruitment and training for new volunteers will start in mid-February and consists of a 30-hour initial

training followed by internship hours and ongoing training and support. HICAP is fortunate to have dedicated, knowledgeable volunteer counselors who help Medicare beneficiaries with everything from simple to very complex situations.

Ongoing volunteer time commitment requires a minimum of three hours weekly and additional time during the fall quarter for annual enrollment.

There will be an informational meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 29, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Del Norte Senior Center, 1765 Northcrest Drive.

Potential volunteers should possess excellent computer skills, be able to retain complex information, and have good listening skills. The meeting is open to anyone and any age. For more information, call Suzi Hendry, HICAP Volunteer Coordinator at 707-444-3000, ext. 221.
