Crescent City Harbor is expected to have a new CEO/ harbormaster next week.

Although the employment paperwork will not be finalized until Tuesday, the harbor district offered the position to Charles Helms of Seattle on Thursday night and Helms accepted the offer Friday.

Helms will replace Richard Young, who is retiring.

"He's a real go-getter," said Harbor Commissioner James Ramsey of Helms. "He's got lots of energy and he should be a good marketer. He has great ideas about drawing traffic into the harbor."

Helms' last position was board secretary and director of national affairs for the National Community Reinvestment Coalition, "an association of more than 600 community-based organizations that promote access to basic banking services including credit and savings, to create and sustain affordable housing, job development and vibrant communities for America's working families," according to NCRC's website.

Helms' experience with securing financing through NCRC should prove to be a valuable asset for the harbor, Ramsey said.

"We spent a lot of money doing a very intense and thorough job of trying to find a new harbormaster to replace Richard Young, and Charlie Helms is the best candidate to come out of it," said Harbor Commissioner Ron Phillips. "We're proud to have him on board."

"I think he's going to work well with this community because he's very sensitive to all of the different needs we have with respect to economic development," said Harbor Commission President Wes White.

The commission will consider approval of Helms' employment agreement during its regular meeting Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Harbor District Office, 101 Citizens Dock Road, Crescent City.
