A Smith River man who has been having issues with burglars shot at two over the weekend.
Authorities responded to a report of a burglary around 3:15 a.m. on the 14000 block of U.S. Highway 101 in Smith River, said sheriff's Sgt. Richard Griffin.
A burglar climbed into the man's home through a window and when the resident saw the shine of a flashlight he confronted the intruder with a handgun, Griffin said.
The burglar ran out of the house, where he met up with an accomplice, Griffin said.
The resident exchanged words with the burglars before firing off two rounds into the ground, Griffin said.
The burglars then fled south through a nearby field, Griffin said.
The house had been burglarized around Christmas as well, Griffin said.
This time the burglars didn't get away with much, but had stacked items in an outbuilding on the man's property, Griffin said.
DNA taken from the property has been sent for testing, Griffin said.
