No missing plane, Coast Guard concludes

Adam Spencer, The Triplicate

Two U.S. Coast Guard helicopters and a 47-foot motor lifeboat spent several hours searching for a downed plane off the northern coast of Del Norte County on Monday night before determining that it was a false distress report.

"The original call was reported to Brookings Police Department from a 90-year-old woman who said that a plane took off at 4 p.m. and disappeared into the clouds," said Nate Littlejohn, a Coast Guard spokesman, adding that the search was called off at 8 p.m. The woman reported something metallic tumble out of the sky and crash into the water, Littlejohn said.

"We searched for several hours and didn't find anything, and at this point we have no indication that there was any flight missing," Littlejohn said, adding that all aircraft that had flights planned Monday were accounted for.
