The death of a Pelican Bay State Prison inmate on Monday is being investigated as a suicide, according to prison officials.

Anthony Johnson, 30, was found unresponsive in his cell in the prison's Administrative Segregation Unit around 12:25 p.m. and pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

While officials declined to comment on the official cause of death pending an autopsy, the Del Norte County Sheriff's Office call logs indicate Johnson was found hanging.

Johnson had been incarcerated within the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation since 2007

and was servinga 15-plus-year sentence. He was transferred to Pelican Bay last month, six weeks before his death.
