For second time in 2 weeks, homeowner goes after suspect

A suspected burglar suffered a stab wound scuffling with a Crescent City homeowner Monday afternoon, authorities said.

The homeowner, Calvin Huff, arrived to his property on the 900 block of Childs Avenue to discover a man rooting around inside a wooden storage container next to the house, said sheriff's Commander Tim Athey.

Noting that a lock on the front door of the house was broken, Huff quickly trapped the man inside the container and called police to report a burglary, Athey said. While he was on the phone with dispatch, the trapped man kicked his way out of the container and reportedly threatened to kill Huff, Athey said.

In the ensuing altercation, 19-year-old Dakota Fisher of Crescent City was stabbed in the leg with Huff's single-blade pocket knife. A deputy arrived while the two men were still fighting and secured Fisher.

Fisher was transported to Sutter Coast Hospital for treatment, then transferred to St. Joseph's Hospital in Eureka later that day. He was released into custody Tuesday afternoon.

Nothing was reported missing from the home or the storage container, authorites said, adding Fisher will likely be charged with burglary and criminal threats when he returns to Del Norte.

It was the second time this month that a local homeowner has fought back during a burglary attempt, authorities said. Two weeks ago a Smith River man fired shots after chasing an intruder out of his house in the middle of night.
