The body of a middle-aged man was found in the Gasquet District of Six Rivers National Forest near Craigs Creek on Saturday.

Del Norte County Sheriff's Office officials said that although the cause of death has not been determined, foul play is not suspected. An autopsy will be performed this week.

Authorities believe they have identified the man, who is from outside of Del Norte County, but they were not releasing the name Monday until identification is confirmed and the victim's next of kin is notified.

A group of people on foot came across the man about a mile upstream on Craigs Creek from its confluence with South Fork Smith River and reported the body to the Sheriff's Office. The man appeared to have been dead for less than a week, and a limited amount of camping gear was found nearby, according to sheriff's commander Bill Steven.

"There appears to be no foul played involved, but the investigation is ongoing," Steven said.
