Musical with a big cast and an orchestra runs for two weekends at Crescent Elk

Rodgers and Hammerstein's famous Western musical "Oklahoma!" opens Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Crescent Elk Auditorium, 994 G St. in Crescent City.

There will be six performances by the Lighthouse Repertory Theatre.

This giant, wild and colorful production, with full orchestration and a cast of more than 30 people, is directed by Kirsten Randrup.

First produced for the stage in 1943, the show has proven to be an ageless wonder, with unforgettable song classics such as "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning," "People Will Say We're in Love," "The Surrey with the Fringe on Top" and many more.

In the Oklahoma territory of the early 1900s, there are two pairs of lovers who vie with an evil ranch hand and a traveling peddler for the hearts of the women they adore. Curly McLain is a cowboy who has trouble admitting his feelings to Laurey Willliams, as she does to him, because of their mutual stubbornness.

Judd Fry, the seedy hired hand at Laurey's farm, tries to come between them.

Ado Annie Carnes is torn between Will Parker, a cowboy who has strong feelings for her, and Ali Hakim, a Persian peddler who is a ladies' man and desires the beautiful girl but doesn't want to marry her.

Amidst all the songs, the dancing, the guns and the knives, the action, the leather and the lace, love comes shining through in the glorious days of the golden West.

The shows plays over the next two weekends, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.
