11 contestants seek title as annual competition resumes Saturday at Crescent Elk
Eleven Del Norte High juniors will compete for scholarships and the title of Distinguished Young Women of Del Norte County for 2015 on Saturday night.
The event begins at 7 p.m. at the Crescent Elk Auditorium.
There are five levels of competition: Scholastics, Interview, Talent, Self-expression and Fitness. More than $3,500 in scholarships donated by local businesses and service organizations will be awarded. The event, formerly known as Junior Miss, issponsored by the Crescent City Jaycees.
The college-bound contestants must have GPAs of 3.0 or higher. The local winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship and will compete at the state program in Bakersfield.
Prior to the evening event, two categories will be judged.Scholastic will be judged based on transcripts, and interviews will be held earlier in the day.
The remaining three categories of Fitness, Talent and Self-expression will be presented for the public view on stage. The judges will take a break to deliberate on the winners, add the scores and then the scholarship winners are announced.

andbull;Kristine Elizabeth Cowan,who plans to pursue a career in marine biology orteaching. She is a varsity cheer captain and Dance Team member and plans to attend the University of California at San Diego or Santa Barbara.
andbull;Alexis Cailyn Wright,who plans to pursue a career in journalism or marine biology/veterinarian.She's involved with the Dance Team,Calvary Heritage Church and Youth Group, tennis, track and basketball, and plans to attend Shasta College before transferring to a university.
andbull;Whitney Dawn Reitz,who plans to pursue a doctorate of physical therapy at Long Beach State University. She is a physical therapy aide and participates in the Crescent City Cowgirls Equestrian Drill Team, gymnastics at Lost Coast, the track team, cheerleading and acrobatics at Dance Art Studio.
andbull;Grace Madeline Bruschi,whowants to pursue a career in physical therapy.She plans to attend Humboldt State University. Her activities include softball, volleyball, basketball, track and youth church group.
andbull;Griffin Ellee Aminah Walker,whowants to pursue a career in mathematics or engineering. She plans to attend Northwestern University or Yale University. She is a peer counselor and Dance Club vice president, and other activities include varsity cheerleading, Interact Club and Honor Society.
andbull;Aliyah Marie Tinsley,who wants to study psychology and cosmetology at Brigham Young University or Utah Valley University. Her activities include varsity cheerleading, track, Leadership Club, Fashion Club,Marine training, yearbook, junior high assistant cheer coach and tumbling class instructor.
andbull;Sarah Lyn Cowan,who wants to pursue a career in zoology, marine biology or some other form of animal care. She intends to attendUSC or the University of California at San Diego or Santa Barbara. Her activities include being co-captain of the Drill Team and president of the Honors Society, track, and Interact.
andbull;Ariel Lynn Dasher,who wants to attend Humboldt State University and pursue a career in marine biology. Her activities include Drill Team, marching and concert bands,karate training and being a nursery assistant at Foursquare Church and a fifth-grade leader of Vacation Bible School.
andbull;Henali Bimal Joshi,who wants to pursue a career as a mental health counselor and attend Sonoma State, Oregon State or Sacramento State. Her activities include Drill Team, Leadership Class, Del Norte Youth Council, bead jewelry making and the Scholarship Mentoring Program.
andbull;Aubrianne Ralphs,whowants to attend Brigham Youing University-Idaho and pursue a career working with young children. Her activities include being church youth girls camp director, Drill Team,choir, band and Leadership Class.
andbull;Eirene Carlin Dixon,who wants to pursue a career in equine science and behavioral science and attend college in Santa Rosa. Her activities include Future Farmers of America, Upward Bound,Drill Team and softball.
