Two men arrested in stolen property case

Authorities have arrested two men in Smith River on possession of stolen property charges.

On Sunday, the Del Norte County Sheriff's Office arrested Russell Simas, 26, at his home in Smith River on charges ofpossession of stolen property, possession of a controlled substance and possession of a sawed-off shotgun, said sheriff's Commander Bill Steven.

Deputies did not enter Simas' residence at that time, but with the stolen property found in Simas' possession, the Sheriff's Office was able to obtain a search warrant for his house on Oceanview Drive, Steven said.

The Del Norte County Task Force raided the residence with seven officers on Tuesday and found more stolen property in the home, Steven said.

Simas' roommate Daniel Mauck, 50, was present at the time of the raid and was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance and a firearm, and for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Steven said a chain saw and an agricultural sprayer were among the stolen items recovered.
