The Triplicate dubbed me Del Norte's Ambassador of Ping Pong in my Senior Sleuth column on Jan. 21. The term was tongue-in-cheek, but I took it to heart anyway. I've been laying the groundwork for a community ping pong program ever since.

The problem with ping pong is lack of storage space for the tables. So I got Walmart to donate special nets that would fit on any table to be used for ping pong. Unfortunately, the only place that actually used the nets was Jordan Recovery/HASP, 1231 Northcrest Drive, Crescent City.

Next I searched for ping pong programs that may already exist in the area. I found a great one in Brookings at the Seventh-day Adventist Church. They meet every Tuesday and Thursday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. They are advanced players, and the public is invited to play or watch. The program is free.

From that Brookings program, I got two men, Craig Dauber and Jim Anderson, to help start a program in Crescent City. I made friends with the wonderful Father Adam Kotas at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Crescent City, and he agreed to use their gym for ping pong. Father Adam is very much in favor of bringing the community together in a fun and safe way. Then we brought in the ping pong tables that were stored at Crescent Elk school.

I am happy to announce the new free summer ping pong program will begin Thursday at St. Joseph's gym. Beginner and intermediate ping pong will be 2andndash;4 p.m., and tournament style ping pong will be 4andndash;8 pm. The program is adults only: until further notice, ping pong will not be available for anyone under 18. The program will continue through August and will be held the same hours on most Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please attend the first meeting and get a schedule. Or call me, Joan Miles, at 464-2729.

Father Adam said he hopes this new summer ping pong program will take off. Let's show him we are behind this great community program. We need people with leadership skills to play, teach or direct what I hope will be a dynamic, growing project. In other words, we need more ping pong ambassadors. Let's make Crescent City a ping pong town!
