2 convicted in burl poaching case

The Associated Press

EUREKA - Two men accused of cutting knobby growths known as burls from an old growth redwood tree in Northern California have been convicted of felony vandalism.

Danny Garcia, of Orick, is scheduled to be sentenced on June 19 after pleading guilty to the charge on May 27. The second defendant, Larry Morrow, also pleaded guilty to felony vandalism. He was sentenced to three years probation.

Officials with Redwood National and State Parks say a researcher found several large burls missing from a tree in the park in April

2013.

An anonymous tip led to the discovery of the burls at a shop in Del Norte County and the subsequent arrests.
