Fire restrictions for Six Rivers

Submitted

Fire use restrictions for Six Rivers National Forest take effect Monday, as announced by acting Forest Supervisor Mike Minton on Friday.

"Conditions on the National Forest have transitioned to a point in the season where we are at a greater risk of wildfires becoming more difficult to contain," Minton said in a statement. "While lightning is the number one cause of wildland fire on the Six Rivers National Forest, human-caused fires are a major concern."

The fire restrictions will:

andbull; Limit open campfires to Developed Recreation Sites and Designated Fire Safe Sites (see listing below).

andbull; Limit smoking to enclosed vehicles, buildings, Developed Recreation Sites and within Designated Fire Safe Sites.

andbull; Prohibit the use of internal combustion engines except on National Forest System roads or designated trails.

andbull; Prohibit welding or operating acetylene or other torches with an open flame.

andbull; Prohibit use of explosives.

Exemptions to the restrictions include:

andbull; With a valid California campfire permit, the use of lanterns or portable stoves using gas, jellied petroleum or pressurized liquid is allowed. Barbecue grills using briquettes are not allowed.

andbull; With a valid fuel-wood cutting permit, a chain saw can be operated for fuel-wood gathering within the terms of the permit.

The Developed Recreation Sites on the Smith River NRA/Gasquet Ranger District are: Patrick Creek, Grassy Flat, Panther Flat, Big Flat and North Fork Campgrounds.

The Designated Fire Safe Sites on the Smith River NRA/Gasquet RD are: Bear Basin Lookout Campsite, Pappas Flat, Madrona River Access, Chimney Flat and Flat Camp.
