Overnight closure of Highway 101

Triplicate Staff

There will be a full overnight closure of U.S. Highway 101 from 10 p.m. Sunday to 4 a.m. Monday at Klamath River Bridge as part of a $7 million bridge hinge replacement project.

If required, there will be a second full overnight closure from 10 p.m. Monday through 4 a.m. Tuesday. Watch highway electronic message signs for an update regarding whether a second full closure will be needed.

In the second season of construction on the bridge, also known as the G.H. Douglas Memorial Bridge, Caltrans is replacing the third of three hinges, extending the service life of the structure.

A hinge is a vital part of a bridge that allows it to expand and contract with constant changes in temperature.

The overnight closure will allow the lowering of equipment and material beneath the bridge.

Separate full closures will be required in October to move equipment.

In addition to overnight closures, one-way traffic control with a temporary signal is in effect 24 hours per day, seven days per week, causing motorists anticipated 5-minute delays.
