Americana, sounds of centuries past at Sat. concert

Triplicate Staff

Old ballads, love songs, shape-note gospel and dance tunes from New England and Southern Appalachia will treat concertgoers Saturday evening courtesy of the Pistol River Concert Association.

The association will host Tim Ericksen and the Trio de Pumpkintown. Eriksen creates a "distinctive hardcore Americana sound" using the banjo, fiddle, guitar and bajo sexto - a 12-string Mexican acoustic bass. He is known for the albums Soul of the January Hills, recorded in 2010, and the 2012 Christmas album Star in the East.

The Trio de Pumpkintown features music from the 18th and 19th centuries centered around a fictional New England village. Musical selections include love songs, murder ballads, sea shanties and Afro-Celtic sing-alongs.

The concert will take place at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Pistol River Friendship Hall. Tickets are $15 each and are available by calling Wright's Custom Framing in Brookings at 541-469-7900 or Gold Beach Books at 541-247-2495.
