Burl poacher gets community service

Triplicate Staff

EUREKA - An Orick man has been sentenced to 700 hours of community service and ordered to pay back $11,000 following his conviction on charges he poached a large burl from a redwood in the Redwood National and State Parks.

Danny E. Garcia also received a one-year suspended sentence Thursday in Humboldt County Superior Court.

He was one of two people convicted of felony vandalism after rangers tracked slabs cut from a redwood south of the Klamath River to a shop in Del Norte County.

Rangers say the poaching has been going on for years due to high unemployment and drug addiction.
