Siskiyou Wilderness anniversary event Sunday

Triplicate Staff

Thirty years ago, the High Siskiyous, - the mountains along the eastern border of Del Norte County - were designated as the Siskiyou Wilderness area.

To mark the 30th anniversary of the designation, there will be a free tour of the fire lookouts overlooking the High Siskiyous offered this Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., hosted by the Friends of Del Norte.

The "Lookout look-in" tour is the first event kicking off two months of planned events hosted by the Friends of Del Norte for the Siskiyou Wilderness 30th Anniversary Celebration.A more detailed description of planned events will be in Thursday's Triplicate.

Organizer Joe Gillepsie said the "Lookout look-in" tour is a perfect opportunity for those who are interested in gaining some perspective of the Siskiyou Wilderness without embarking on a strenuous hike or backpacking trip.

Participants will meet at the Slant Bridge parking area (one mile east of Hiouchi atthe intersection of Highway 199 and South Fork Road) by 11 a.m. Folks are asked to bring a sack lunch and water. Binoculars are suggested.

You can sign up on the Siskiyou Wilderness 30th Anniversary Celebration Facebook page (facebook.com/SiskiyouWilderness) or by calling Gillespie at 954-1641.
