Del Norte County's literacy program is collecting empty laser and inkjet cartridges, used cell phones, CD players and used iPods and iPads.

For the fourth year, Del Norte Reads will partner with the FundingFactory Recycling Program. The program will send the waste products it collects to the FundingFactory in exchange for their products or cash.

"Del Norte Reads is always looking for new ways to fund our program," literacy manager Kelley Nolan explained in a written statement.

"With this effort, the community can help local residents reach their education goals while helping Del Norte County go green."

The program's recycling project is an ongoing fundraiser. Nolan said many businesses save their ink and toner cartridges before turning them in. The program's big supporters are Child Support Services, the Yurok Tribe's Environmental Department, Six Degrees of Celebration and Johnston's Home and Garden, Nolan said.

Ink cartridges can bring in between 10 cents and $3, according to Nolan. Old cell phones can vary in value from 50 cents to $5. She's hoping to collect at least 21 items before she sends a shipment to the FundingFactory.

"We don't have to pay for shipping as long as we're meeting their requirements," Nolan said. "It's really, really nice."

Del Norte Reads can follow its carbon footprint viaFundingFactory.comor Better World Books, another organization the program works with, Nolan said.

"My whole goal is that we're recycling. We're pretty big recyclers here," she said. "This is ongoing for us, and it's just the simplest way to recycle and yet we receive income."

Del Norte Reads is encouraging local businesses to donate their used printer and toner cartridges and to serve as drop-off locations for the general public.

Del Norte Reads will provide the collection boxand will schedule regular donation pickup by a literacy volunteer.

The community and supporting businesses can also drop off cartridges and other items at the Del Norte Reads office, 1080 Mason Mall #9 in Crescent City.

Del Norte Reads is funded through the California State Library Literacy Services as well as through donations and a variety of fundraising activities.
