A man was airlifted to a Medford hospital after falling approximately 25 feet near a Smith River bridge Wednesday, CalFire officials say.

CalFire Battalion Chief Tim Devos said the fall was reported at 12:15 p.m. by a U.S. Forest Service Protection Officer who was at the scene at Second Bridge in Hiouchi.

Devos said the victim suffered an open fractured fibula injury in one leg. The other leg appeared to be broken, Devos said.

The victim was airlifted to Providence Hospital in Medford. The injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, Devos said.

Del Norte Search and Rescue and the U.S. Forest Service also responded to the call.

The name, age and residence of the victim was not available.
