Linda Neomi Busch Porteous, born in Okeene, Okla., on Nov. 18, 1922, passed away Aug. 10, 2008, in Crescent City.

Linda was born to Jacob and Sophie Busch and was the youngest of nine children. She was baptized and confirmed in the German Lutheran Church of Okeene. After the loss of her mother at the age of 10, the family moved to Saginaw, Mich., where she graduated from Saginaw High School in 1940. At the age of 18, she took over her brothers' homemade ice cream and lunch counter business while they were in the service.

Linda later moved to San Francisco and was employed in various office work. She met Hiram "Red" Porteous in San Francisco after the war and they were married in Berkeley on Feb. 4, 1950, and moved to Crescent City in April 1950. Linda worked alongside Red at their business, Red Porteous Body and Paint Service, where she took care of the bookkeeping and office work until she retired in 1976. During her working years, she raised her deceased sister's children, Jerry and Mary Hicks.

After retiring, she enjoyed RV traveling and worldwide traveling with her husband, Red. She loved the ocean, beachcombing for shells, painting, cards and many varieties of arts and crafts.

She was a past member of the Lake Earl Grange, VFW Auxiliary and Soroptimists, having served as past president. She was a current member of the Crescent City Women's Club, TOPS Club #388 and the Republican Women's Club.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Hiram Red Porteous of Crescent City; children and their spouses, Jerry and Bonnie Hicks of Seabeck, Wash., and grandchildren Bryan, Greg and Jessica Hicks; Mary and Frank Hickman of Warren, Mich., and grandchildren Sandy, John and Jill Hickman; sisters-in-law Ruth Busch of Saginaw, Mich., Joan and John Eggebraaten, and Margaret Genereau of Minn.; brother-in-law Leonard and Shirley Porteous and nephews Alan Porteous of Crescent City, and Roger Porteous of Santa Rosa; six great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Visitation will be held at Wier's Mortuary Chapel on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Wier's Chapel, with interment to follow at the Del Norte County Veteran's Cemetery.
