Obituaries: Benjamin Franklin Badger III(1921-2008)

Benjamin Franklin Badger III, 86, of Crescent City, died June 19, 2008, in Brookings of age-related causes.

He was born Dec. 8, 1921, in Norwood, Mass., to Herbert and Gertrude (Van Stry) Badger and grew up in Walpole, Mass.

He married Francena andquot;Nanandquot; Bradbury, his high school sweetheart, on March 1, 1942.

Mr. Badger joined the U.S. Army in 1942. He trained pilots throughout World War II and was honorably discharged in 1945.

The Badgers moved to San Jose in 1953, where Ben worked as a surveyor for George Nolte Civil Engineering until his retirement in 1974. Ben and Nan built their own home after moving to Crescent City in 1975.

He was a dog lover and steam train enthusiast all his life. He resided at Good Samaritan Village in Brookings after a series of heart- and stroke-related heath issues since 2003.

Surviving family members include his wife Nan Badger; son Lance Badger and his partner Roxey Hastings; daughter-in-law Jill Badger; grandchildren Wade, Brad, Ben, Ember and Jesse; great-grandchildren Racquel, Brandon, Skylier, Ty, Breanna, Ogden and Cerise Badger.

The family will gather to scatter his ashes in the ocean and celebrate his life at a later date. Cremation was under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.
