Chester Wayne Mayer, 72, died on September 13, 2007 in Eureka. He was born on May 20, 1935 in Turlock, to William and Sylvia (Clark) Mayer. He was a 37-year resident of Del Norte County having moved here from Roseburg, Ore., in 1969.
Mr. Mayer served with the U.S. Navy during the Cuban Conflict and was a lifelong member of VFW Post #1381. Prior to his retirement, he was employed at local lumber mills and was also a commercial fisherman. In 1968 he married Ruthe E. DeMars, they were married for 25 years. After their divorce they remained the best of friends.
He is survived by his former wife and best friend, Ruthe E. Mayer of Crescent City; step children Lester Campbell of Champlain, NY, Vern Campbell of Eugene, Ore., Leala Wilson of Port Townsend, Wash., Larry Campbell of Crescent City, Wanda Walton of Idaho Falls, Idaho, DeEll Eisenbiez of Klama, Wash. and Gail Robin of Sonoma.
He was preceded in death by brother Bill Mayer, sister Betty Warren and step daughter Marthy DeMars.
Close family and friends are invited to a remembrance gathering to be held at the family home on Sunday, Nov. 18 at 2 p.m. at 436 Meridian, Crescent City.
