D Brown Oppmann, a 21-year resident of Brookings, died Oct. 9, 2007 of lung cancer at age 61.
Born March 15, 1946, in Perth Amboy, N.J., Mrs. Oppmann was raised in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. She graduated from New York State University at Fredonia with teaching credentials but never taught; although she loved the children, she felt impeded by school administration.
Mrs. Oppmann moved to the San Francisco area in 1969 and worked as a sales representative and then manager of a fine women's apparel store in Sausalito. In 1978, she met her future husband, Andrew W. Oppmann Jr. in Downeyville and was married in San Francisco in 1979. The couple lived in Camarillo, Honeydew, and Humboldt County before moving to Brookings in 1986.
An avid supporter of environmental efforts, Mrs. Oppmann was a member of the National Arbor Day Foundation, Sierra Club, 1000 Friends of Oregon, the Oregon National Resource Council, Headwaters, of Ashland, Ore., and EPIC of Garberville.
She was particularly active with air pollution problems. Mrs. Oppmann was an avid organic gardener for years, tending 25 fruit trees and a large vegetable garden. She was also a member of MOA Foundation of Los Angeles.
In addition to her husband, she leaves one sister and brother-in-law, Linda Brown-Johnson and Phillip Johnson of Boulder Creek, Colo.; two nephews; one niece; three grandnephews and one grandniece; and many friends in the Brookings-Harbor area.
A celebration of life is pending. Mrs. Oppmann wished, in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to the memorial tree planting activities of the National Arbor Day Foundation, Trees of Memory, 211 N. 12th St., Lincoln, NE.
Cremation is under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel andamp; Crematory.
