Obituaries: Janice M. Bowen(1947-2007)


Janice M. Bowen passed away on August 22, 2007 in Crescent City, following her third bout with cancer. She was born in Crescent City on September 28, 1947, the third of nine siblings.

Janice was a very community involved person. She had been a tribal leader, holding various offices within the Tolowa Nation. She represented the federally unrecognized American Indians by Congressional Appointment to the California Indian Advisory Council on American Indian Policy.

Janice is survived by her children, Max Keyes, Darklis Keyes, and Audree Taylor; her loved stepchildren, Danelle, Lawrence and Kenny Zosel; and 16 grandchildren. She is also survived by her aunties, Patrie Gorbet Butler and Esther Bowen Jumping Eagle; 8 brothers and sisters; numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Audree Gorbet Bowen; grandparents, Happy and Sadie Roberts Gorbet and Charley Booney and Ida David Bowen; and by her husband Norman Zosel.

Viewing will be held at Wier's Mortuary Chapel from 10 a.m. to noon on August 27, 2007.

A fellowship will be held at the Del Norte County Fairgrounds in the arts and crafts building from 12:30-3 p.m. on August 27.

Arrangements are under the direction of Wier's Mortuary Chapel of Crescent City.
