Edna Lorene Allen

Edna Lorene Allen, 92, of Brookings died of natural causes May 25 at a local care facility. She lived the last three years of her life in Curry Good Samaritan Center, where she continued to touch lives.

She was born in Colville, Wash., to James M. and Hazel Luella (Kissell) Barnett May 28, 1914, and was raised in the Sumpter Valley area of Baker County, Ore.

She married Ralph Benjamin Allen Feb. 28, 1934, in the Barnett family home in Sumpter Valley. Her father performed the wedding ceremony.

The Allen family were farmers. Later her husband worked on the Sumpter Valley bucket line gold ridge.

She kept her pioneer spirit all of her life.

The couple had two children, and Edna enjoyed her role as a mother. The family went dancing on weekends and played cards in the evenings. They cut wood and fished for trout together.

The Allens moved to Smith River in 1955, where Ralph worked in the lumber industry and Edna was employed as a cook at Smith River School for 20 years. She enjoyed cooking for two of her grandchildren during that time.

She worked hard until she retired in the 1970s, then enjoyed gardening, gambling in Reno, Nev., dancing at the Elks Lodge in Brookings and participating in bridge tournaments in Crescent City.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1995 and daughter, Elaine Faye Swint, in 2005.

She is survived by her son, Dale Allen of Los Gatos, grandson, Bruce Allen of Sausalito, granddaughters, Carole Allen of Bakersfield, and Cecilia Allen Martin (David Martin) of Santa Clara.

She is also survived by her great-grandsons, Timothy Ambrose of Bakersfield and Nicholas Martin of Santa Clara.

A private family memorial will be held at a future date in Baker, Ore., where she will be buried with her husband.

Cremation was under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.
