Ethel Mae Chase
Ethel Mae Chase, 88, of Portland, Ore., died on Saturday, March 3, 2007, in a Portland care facility. Ethel was born on Dec. 5, 1918, in Smith River and was the daughter of John and Rose (Lopez) VanPelt. She graduated from Del Norte High School in Crescent City and in 1936, she moved to Fort Klamath. She married Nathaniel Jackson in 1938, and he preceded her in death in 1940. She then married James andquot;Redandquot; Chase in 1946, and he would also precede her in death in 1996. She moved to the Klamath Agency in 1954, then to Yakima, Wash., in 1959, and to Portland, Ore., in the early 1970s. Ethel worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs for 39 years, retiring in 1984.
Ethel enjoyed gardening and reading. She was a member of the Smith River Rancheria, Toastmasters in Yakima, the Hollywood Senior Center in Portland and Federal Employees Retirement Club.
She is survived by her three daughters, Shirley Jackson, Sharon Bergmann, and Karyne Lame Bull; sister, Betty Brown; 7 grandchildren, 12 great-grand-children, and one great-great-grandchild. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday, March 8, 2007, and a funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, March 9, 2007, both at Farnstrom-Gable Funeral Chapel, Portland, Ore., Memorial contributions can be made in her name to the Alzheimer's Association.
