Kat K. Conger passed away Dec. 1, 2013, at the age of 65 after a nearly 40-year battle with MS. Those close to her will remember her incredible strength and good humor despite the crippling disease.

Kat was born in Palo Alto, Calif. She and her husband-to-be, Dennis, attended the same high school in San Jose, graduating in the mid-60s. Before the MS limited her physical ability, Kat enjoyed hiking, backpacking, mountain climbing and beachcombing. She also loved music and reading, and she loved her cats. She was always learning, both formally and through her interaction with people. It was said of her, she never met anyone who was not a friend.

Kat worked at many places during her life; medical practices, psychiatric facilities and with a variety of nonprofit agencies. Her most rewarding job by far though was with the Del Norte County District Attorney's Office as the Program Coordinator of the Victim/Witness Program. In that capacity she was a relentless advocate on behalf of victims of crime, particularly women and children. It was not just a job, but a mission to help others find justice. Kat's guiding principle was fairness for all, and it was a part of all she did.

Kat is survived by her husband Dennis, her sons Zak and Jason, and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Wier's Mortuary Chapel at 1 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 9.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the MS Society, the American Lung Association or a charitable cause of importance to you.
