Michael Joseph Scavuzzo, 80, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2014, at his home in Crescent City. Mike was born Nov. 16, 1933, in Hammonton, N.J. to Mario and Jennie Scavuzzo. He was an avid athlete while growing up. Mike married the love of his life, Martha Kekry, on Dec. 5, 1954.

Their love remained true after almost 60 years of marriage! They met while Martha was working at Bank of America while he was serving in the Air Force at the radar station in Requa. Mike and Martha had one beautiful daughter, Jennie Marie. After about a year of marriage, Mike was discharged and found employment at the McNamara and Peepe Lumber Mill. The Crescent City Post Office hired Mike where he retired after 33 years as a carrier and mail clerk. Mike then opened the "Italian Connection Restaurant" on the corner of G and 3rd.

Mike served in many local political capacities: Crescent City Council and mayor, League of California Cities, Tri-Agency Committee, Senior Board, Harbor Commission, Transportation Commission and LAFCO. Political allies and foes all commended Mike for being fair and standing firm with his beliefs while never being at a loss for words while defending his position. He was also active with the Knights of Columbus, Elks Lodge and Oddfellows.

Mike's hobbies included being a ham radio operator, clamming and fishing with friends, but especially cooking.

During the devastating 1964 Crescent City tsunami Mike rescued his in-laws.

Mike is survived by his bride, Martha, Jennie (daughter) and Michael Saberr, Louise Bisby (granddaughter), Chantal Creci (step-granddaughter) and fiancee Ian Hebert. Relatives include sister Anna and Winnie (dec.) Ritchie, sister Angie and Gene (dec.) Paggi, (dec. sister) Mary and Charlie (dec.) Tarquini and Michael (nephew) and Lisa Tarquini and their children Michael and Anthony, Jordon Kekry (brother-in-law), niece Julie and Mike Badorek, niece Melinda Udalhoven, niece Sandra Werra and their children.
