The Daily Triplicate, in partnership with the Crescent City-Del Norte Chamber of Commerce is accepting nominations for the 4th annual Del Norte Pride Award. The idea of the award came from discussions a few years ago focused on motivating and recognizing citizens who have improved the aesthetics of our community.

We can promote tourism, encourage economic development and recruit people and businesses to come to our fair county, but at the same time we need to make sure we are constantly improving the look of our county. Nature smiled down on Crescent City and Del Norte County. The beauty here is unsurpassed. But vacant rundown storefronts, overgrown lots with rusted trucks, couches thrown on the side of country roads, peeling paintthese are serious and real blight issues. The Del Norte Pride award was created to inspire and reward people who can make a difference.

Former winners of the Del Norte Pride award include Matt Fearing. Matt was the first recipient of the award when he was recognized for the transformation of the buildings that became the Front Street Plaza.

The following year, the award was shared by Bill Stamps Jr. and Matt Mathaney. Matt improved downtown Crescent City by removing weeds and planting flowers. He started in front of his modest bicycle shop on I Street and worked his way through town. Mr. Stamps' made a generous contribution that resulted in the painting and facelift of the Veterans Memorial Hall.

Last year, the award was presented to Rick and Diana Tomasini. Their efforts to remodel the former Escape Hatch, a Third Street building that had been scarred by fire, resulted in a hip and attractive downtown building that houses three businesses.

Who will be the 2008 winner of the Del Norte Pride Award winner? Who do you think has made an outstanding contribution to the look and appearance of our county, its communities and neighborhoods over the past year? The winner will be featured in a front page article in The Daily Triplicate and will be a guest at the Annual Chamber of Commerce dinner in January.

Send your nomination to Pilar Stancliff at the Chamber of Commerce, 101 Front St., Crescent City, CA 95531 or e-mail her at
