Letters: Big Box stores coming to town won't benefit community

I just read the article about Walmart's expansion plans, Starbucks coming in and Walgreens being added to our U.S. Hwy. 101 corridor (andquot;Franchises set sights on Crescent City, andquot; Oct. 11). Next, we can rename our city and county Big Box City and County. Why not encourage locally owned, family owned businesses? These big box and chain store additions will be very detrimental to our community. I remember at one time Crescent City had a downtown. How about getting one back, instead of creating more low wage, uninsured jobs.

While we are at it, let's sell our private property and build rows of houses (that minimum wage earners cannot afford) that all look the same. Daly City of the North could be our nickname.
