Letters: It is not law enforcement's job to determine legality

If Supervisor Finigan (andquot;Debate: Should Pot Be Legal, andquot; Aug.23), actually believes it is the job of law enforcement to decide what is and is not legal, he needs a refresher in representative democracy.

Law enforcement does not andquot;decide on the legalityandquot; of anything. Its function is to enforce laws passed by elected representatives or ballot initiatives, such as the Compassionate Use Act of 1997, which made medical cannabis legal in California.

It is never law enforcement's job to determine what is or is not legal.
