So our president has vetoed a bill that would provide funding so that scientists can create and then kill innocent babies who cannot defend themselves with the hope that their experiments would maybe in 10 years effect cures on some physical problems (andquot;More science fiction at White House, andquot; June 22).
At present, embryonic stem cell experiments are producing nothing but tumors, so the future is not bright.
On the brighter side, we find good results from umbilical cord and bone marrow transplants to fight these same physical problems now. Most recently I read where the doctors at Sheba hospital in Jerusalem gave a woman suffering from acute leukemia umbilical cord cells from two different women and in two weeks her condition began to improve.
It seems to me that our government should be investing in something that works, not something that doesn't work.
