It is the time of year when I have to stop and realize how blessed I have been to have had the privilege of being a Warrior player, coach and fan and getting to know and work with the hundreds of young people I have grown to love and respect.
It is always fun to look back at individuals or teams that have given me such great memories.
Colin Blankenship, class of '85, is one of those special people. I had the privilege of being one of Colin's football coaches while he was at Del Norte.
Colin was a true multi-sport athlete, playing football, basketball and tennis while a Warrior.
He started his football career as a freshman on the JV team, which had a 5-3 record. He showed that he was going to be a skilled player
both as a defensive back and a receiver. As a sophomore he continued football at the JV level and moved to varsity as a junior.
During his senior year he was selected to the Humboldt Del Norte League All-League Team.
When football season ended he would head to the basketball court. There he started his basketball career on the freshman team coached by Don Olson, who is now the school district superintendent.
Colin played JV as a sophomore on a team that had a 12-5 record coached bySteve Shellabarger. As a junior he joined coach Dale Thomas on the varsity and the Warriors' winning ways continued during Colin's four years as a Warrior basketball player - he played on teams that always had winning records.
As a tribute to the respect that Colin's classmates had for him, he was voted"king" for the basketball homecomming festivities. He was carried into the ceremony on a surfboard byhis teammates Todd Taylor, Pat Keyfel and RandyFugate, who is now Del Norte High School's assistant principal.
Colin was a Warrior who fans will always remember for his infectious smile and his competitive spirit. He was fun to know and coach.
Dick Trone writes on his reflections and the history of Del Norte High sports. He played football for the Warriors and graduated in 1951, later serving as the school's football coach for a number of years.
