One might guess from some of my articles how proud I am of our Del Norte High Warrior football team and the job Louie Nova and his staff do with our youth. Nova, our head coach, offensive coordinator Blaine Lopez and defense coordinator Fritz Baldwin are all former Warrior standouts.
There are three additional members of the staff that are also former Del Norte High standouts.
Mike Zeck, a 1997 graduate, works with the Warrior backs. After graduation from high school, Mike first went to the University of San Diego. After one season there he decided that he wanted to play at a higher level. He transferred first to College of the Siskiyous and then to the University of Oregon. While at Oregon he played in the 2000 Holiday Bowl against the University of Texas.
Mike came home to Crescent City and for the last three years has been a part of Coach Novas staff. Mike works as a personal fitness trainer at both local gyms. In his spare time he plays football for the local semi pro football team the Wild Rivers Storm.
He is one of the top running backs and defensive backs in the league. While at San Diego Mike became friends with another member of the Storm, Quinn Closson and after graduation Mike and Quinn sailed Quinn's sailboat to Australiaa trip that tests any ones endurance.
Jeremy Lacy, a 1991 Warrior graduate, is in his fourth season coaching linebackers for coach Nova. Jeremy is very special to me since I had the privilege of being his coach during the 1989 season.
He was an outstanding linebacker and fullback for that team. Even more important than his athletic ability is his wonderful character. This carries over to all he is around. Jeremy also donates his time as an assistant wrestling coach.
After graduating from Del Norte Jeremy played for the College of the Redwoods. After Redwood he joined the Air Force and did a four year stint serving our country. For the last seven years he has worked for the Department of Corrections. Jeremy is in his first year playing linebacker and fullback for the Storm.
The senior member of this trio is Troy Duncan. Troy is the special teams coach for coach Nova.
He is another one that brings back fond memories as I had the privilege of being on of his coaches on the 1982 Warrior football championship team. He was a very good offensive and defensive lineman. During his reign the Warrior special teams have been excellent. Troy has done a number of things since graduating. He married one of Del Norte's outstanding female athletes, Lezlie Payne. Another is he started and owns Red Sky Roofing, a very successful contracting business.
These three Warrior grads continue to give of their time and knowledge to our youth and what they bring to the football program really help make this a program all Warrior fans are proud of. All three of the young men are the kind of people that would make any parent proud.
