UKIAH In a three-game marathon on Saturday, the Del Norte High varsity softball team took third place at a tournament in Ukiah, going 2-1.

Junior pitcher Alyssa Bergquist and junior centerfielder Jennifer Gustafson received all-tourney selections, with Bergquist having 28 strikeouts over three games.

The Warriors are currently 4-1 for the year.

Originally, the team was supposed to play on both Friday and Saturday, but rain moved the Friday game to Saturday.

In the first contest, Del Norte defeated Fort Bragg 1-0.

Bergquist had 14 strikeouts and head coach Jackie Heuberger said the squad did an excellent job on defense.

andquot;That's what kept them in the game,andquot; she said.

The problem was on offense, where the team could not seem to get hits, instead, hitting ground balls, Heuberger said.

The lone score came when junior Michelle Stacey scored on a bunt by sophomore Lauryn Lesina.

In the second game, Del Norte fell to host Ukiah 4-1.

The Warriors had five errors in the game and did not take advantage of key situations to score runs, Heuberger said.

This includes having bases loaded with no outs, but being unable to bring in any runs

Ukiah made a key play early in the game, when Kristin Debacker of Del Norte blasted the ball for an apparent home run and the first score of the contest. But a Ukiah outfielder grabbed the ball as it went over the fence to deny the home run.

The third game went much better, as the Warriors crushed St. Vincent's of Petaluma 15-1. Del Norte had 10 hits in the game and had three triples and two doubles.

andquot;They really hit the ball well,andquot; Heuberger said. andquot;They were hitting the ball in every gap they could find.andquot;

Stacey went 2-for-4 with a RBI, a triple and a double.

Lexi Nelson went 0-1 with three walks and scored two runs. Jessica Morrow went 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs, a double and a triple.

The Warriors next play on Wednesday against Gold Beach, Ore., at home at 4:30 p.m.

Originally, the game was set for Thursday, but was moved so the squad does not have to play on three consecutive days, Heuberger said. On Friday and Saturday, the Warriors take part in a tournament in Arcata.
