YREKA Cold, wet, windy weather with occasional snow could not slow down the Del Norte High varsity baseball team.

Despite these unfavorable conditions, the Warriors persevered and won the championship at the the first annual Gold Nugget Tournament in Yreka over the weekend.

The Warriors went 3-1, soundly defeating Etna 14-2 Saturday evening for the championship after losing to them 9-5 Friday night.

Del Norte improved to 5-3-1 overall.

andquot; It was not the best of conditions, but we got it done, andquot; Warrior head coach Pablo Lorenzi said.

Four Del Norte players were named to the all-tournament team. They were Evan O'Brien, Tyler Travis, Michael Young and Nate Bruder.

O'Brien pitched a complete game on Friday when the Warriors downed host Yreka 5-2.

In the night cap, Del Norte lost to Etna 9-5.

Lorenzi said the conditions were miserable, saying it was about 26 degrees, with gusty winds, although he added it was not an excuse for his team's performance.

On Saturday, the Warriors bounced back and defeated Yreka 14-5 for the second time. In the championship game the Warriors faced Etna again.

The weather during the game was unusual to say the least.

There were patches when it was clear and sunny and a few minutes later it would snow lightly, then get sunny again, and snow yet again a short time later, Lorenzi said.

andquot; It just went back and forth, andquot; he said, adding the snow never stuck to the field.

But the odd weather did not faze the Warriors, who crushed Etna 14-2 to earn the tourney crown.

Lorenzi said he's pleased with the way his team has been coming together as a squad and the way they put up 28 runs in the final two games.

andquot; We're getting better each game, andquot; Lorenzi said

Today, Del Norte is scheduled to face Grants Pass, Ore., on the road at 4 p.m., weather permitting. The JV team is also set to play in Grants Pass.

Lorenzi said the game will be a challenge, with Grants Pass always having a good, competitive squad.

The Cavemen are coached by Del Norte High graduate Stacy Morgan.

andquot; He always has his team's prepared, andquot; Lorenzi said.
