GOLD BEACH, Ore., The Del Norte High varsity softball team opened the season with a win, downing Gold Beach, Ore., on the road 3-1 on Wednesday.

After finding themselves down 1-0 in the fifth inning, the Warriors scored three runs on the way to the victory.

Head coach Jackie Heuberger said the game started off a little bit ugly, with both teams a little rusty and questionable calls made against both squads by the umpires.

Also, Gold Beach pitcher Molly Hockma, who can throw at more than 60 miles per hour, presented a challenge to the Warriors. While Del Norte was able to get hits off her, the team could not get any runs until the fifth inning.

In the fifth, the Warriors got on the board when Jennifer Gustafson bunted. The Gold Beach catcher fielded the ball and overthrew first base. The ball went into right field, as two Warrior runs by Paula Rhodes and Jessica Morrow came in.

Rhodes went 1-for-3 with a single and Gustafson went 2-for 3 with two singles.

Pitcher Alyssa Bergquist had a strong start, throwing six strikeouts, one walk and no earned runs.

The Warriors next play on Friday and Saturday at a tournament in Oregon.
