Roger McCovey won his first three matches at the CIF state wrestling championship in Bakersfield on Friday to advance to a final four of the state's top-ranked wrestlers.

andquot;It's looking pretty promising, but it's not over,andquot; said McCovey's father, Roger Boulby.

First McCovey must face a wrestler, Willie Hernandez, from a Riverside high school who is an unknown to the Del Norte High team.

However, if McCovey advances to the final, he could face semifinalist Jonathen Zamora of Clovis High School, whom McCovey has pinned before.

Senior Jake Young lost his first match in the championship, but found plenty of consolation in the consolation rounds, where he bested Jeff McGee of Alhambra, the #1-ranked wrestler in North Coast's 215-lb. weight class, who has beat Young three times before.

Young topped it off by defeating the Oakland Section champion before losing narrowly in his fourth match of the day.

andquot;Jake had a real good year, and a real good run,andquot; said Assistant Wrestling Coach Clinton Schaad. andquot;And Roger's still going so we're doing well.andquot;
